What Are Dental X-Rays Used For?

Dental X-rays are highly versatile diagnostic tools with several key applications in pediatric dentistry, including:

Assessing the space available for incoming teeth.

Checking if primary teeth are falling out in time for adult teeth to emerge.

Evaluating the progression of bone disease.

Monitoring and diagnosing tooth decay.

Planning treatments, especially orthodontic procedures.

Identifying bone injuries, abscesses, and tumors.

Detecting impacted wisdom teeth.

When Will My Child Need Dental X-Rays?

The frequency of dental X-rays for a child depends on individual circumstances. Children assessed by the pediatric dentist to be at higher risk of tooth decay may need X-rays every six months to monitor changes. Similarly, those at high risk for orthodontic issues, such as malocclusion, might require more frequent X-rays for ongoing evaluation.

For children at average or lower risk for decay and orthodontic problems, X-rays are typically taken every one to two years. Even if there are no immediate concerns about decay, periodic X-rays are important for monitoring tooth and jaw development and ensuring there is enough space for incoming permanent teeth.

In cases of trauma or injury to the oral area, the pediatric dentist may recommend immediate X-rays. Advances in X-ray technology allow for targeted imaging, minimizing unnecessary exposure while focusing on specific areas of the mouth.

What Precautions Will Be Taken to Ensure My Child’s Safety?

Dental radiographs are very safe for children, but the pediatric dentist will take several precautions to ensure that the X-ray process does not cause unnecessary exposure to your child’s cells and tissues.

First, your child will be covered with a lead apron to shield the body from unnecessary radiation. Additionally, high-speed film will be used to minimize radiation exposure as much as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns about dental radiographs or X-rays, please reach out to your pediatric dentist.
